How to Measure Sit Bones for Better Saddle Fit

A saddle that feels acceptable for 20 minutes can become a pressure problem at mile 30. That is why learning how to measure sit bones is more useful than choosing a saddle by appearance, padding thickness, or what works for another rider. Your pelvis needs stable support in the correct location. When it does not get it, your body often shifts forward or side to side, loading soft tissue that was never meant to carry sustained cycling pressure.
Sit-bone measurement is not a perfect prescription. Riding posture, handlebar drop, pelvic rotation, flexibility, and saddle shape all affect the final fit. But it gives you a reliable anatomical starting point, especially if you have recurring sit-bone pain, perineal numbness, chafing, or the feeling that you are balancing on a saddle instead of being supported by it.
What sit bones have to do with saddle pain
Your sit bones, technically called the ischial tuberosities, are the bony contact points at the bottom of your pelvis. In an upright seated position, they should carry much of your body weight. A properly sized saddle creates a stable platform under those structures while managing pressure through the center and nose of the saddle.
A saddle that is too narrow can allow the sit bones to hang off the supportive area. The result is often concentrated loading along the saddle edges, instability, and more pressure on the perineum. A saddle that is excessively wide can interfere with thigh movement, create rubbing, and make it difficult to pedal freely. Width matters because it affects where force enters the saddle, not because wider is automatically softer.
This is also why thick conventional foam is not a complete answer. Foam can initially feel plush, then compress under repeated load and permit pressure to concentrate where the rider needs support most. Effective comfort requires controlled force dissipation, stable support, and material that continues to respond throughout the ride.
How to measure sit bones at home
The simplest method uses corrugated cardboard. You need a piece large enough to sit on, a firm chair or flat bench, a marker, and a ruler or tape measure marked in millimeters. Cardboard works because your sit bones leave two visible compression points when you sit with enough body weight behind the measurement.
Set up the cardboard correctly
Place the cardboard on a hard, flat surface. Do not put it on a couch, padded chair, mattress, or thick carpet. Soft surfaces blur the impressions and can make your measurement wider or less distinct.
Wear normal cycling shorts or thin athletic clothing. Heavy jeans and thick seams can obscure the impressions. Sit down with your back relatively upright and both feet supported. Your knees should be near a 90-degree bend, not stretched far in front of you.
Now lean forward slightly from the hips, roughly as you would on a fitness bike or road bike with a moderate handlebar reach. Keep your weight on the cardboard for 30 to 60 seconds. A small rocking motion can help create clearer marks, but do not slide around enough to smear the impression.
Find the centers of the impressions
Stand up and inspect the cardboard. You are looking for two compressed dimples, usually visible as flattened areas or darker pressure marks. Mark the center of each impression, then measure the straight-line distance from one center to the other in millimeters.
That number is your basic sit-bone width. Repeat the test two or three times using fresh areas of cardboard. If the results are within a few millimeters, average them. If they vary substantially, revisit your setup. The usual causes are a soft seating surface, heavy clothing, uneven posture, or measuring the outside edges of the dents instead of their centers.
If cardboard does not show a clear imprint, aluminum foil placed over a thin layer of cardboard can help. Sit on the foil carefully, then look for the two deepest depressions. A purpose-built sit-bone measuring device at a bike shop can also be useful, but a careful home measurement is often accurate enough to narrow your saddle options.
Turn your measurement into a saddle-width starting point
Your sit-bone number is not usually the saddle width you should buy. Saddles are measured at different locations and have different shapes, so the relationship between the stated width and the actual supportive zone varies by model. The key question is whether the saddle's load-bearing platform supports your sit bones in your normal riding position.
As a practical starting point, riders generally need a saddle that provides additional width beyond their measured sit-bone distance. More upright riders tend to need more support because their pelvis remains more vertical and the sit bones bear a larger share of body weight. Riders in a low, aggressive road position rotate their pelvis forward, which can shift contact toward the front of the pubic area and reduce the required rear support width.
Do not treat these categories as fixed formulas. Two riders with the same measurement can prefer different widths because one rides gravel with a relatively upright torso while the other spends hours in a deep road position. Saddle curvature matters too. A flat saddle lets a rider change position more easily, while a more curved profile can create a defined support zone. Neither is universally better.
The goal is simple: your sit bones should rest on the saddle's intended support area without forcing your inner thighs to fight its outer edges.
Check the measurement against your riding position
A correct width cannot compensate for a poor bike setup. If the saddle is too high, you may rock your hips with every pedal stroke, creating localized friction and repeated impact. If it is too far forward, your hands and soft tissue may take extra load. If the nose is tipped too high, pressure can increase in the perineal region. If it is tipped too far down, you may slide forward and overload your arms.
After choosing a width, test it during a real ride rather than judging it in a parking lot. A good saddle should allow stable pedaling and consistent support without hot spots that build as time passes. Some initial awareness is normal when changing saddles, especially if your old saddle masked pressure with soft foam. Numbness, sharp pain, persistent chafing, or soreness that lingers well after the ride are not adjustment signals to ignore.
Make one fit change at a time. Start with saddle height and fore-aft position, then make small angle adjustments in increments of about one degree. Changing width, tilt, height, and shorts all at once makes it nearly impossible to identify the source of improvement or discomfort.
Common sit-bone measurement mistakes
The most common mistake is measuring on a soft surface. Another is sitting completely upright when your actual riding posture is much lower. Neither result is useless, but both can mislead saddle selection. Measure in a posture that resembles your most common riding position.
Avoid assuming that a wider saddle is the answer to every discomfort complaint. Pain directly under the sit bones may indicate insufficient support, but perineal numbness can also relate to saddle angle, saddle shape, reach, bar drop, or a position that causes excessive pelvic rotation. Similarly, pain on only one side may point to a cleat issue, leg-length difference, previous injury, or asymmetry in how you pedal.
Also, do not measure a saddle only at its widest rear edge and compare that number to your sit-bone width. The relevant width is where your sit bones actually contact the saddle. On some designs, that functional support zone sits forward of the rear-most point and is meaningfully narrower than the catalog measurement suggests.
What a properly supported ride should feel like
The right saddle does not disappear completely. Cycling still places sustained load through a small contact area. But it should feel stable, predictable, and free of escalating pressure. You should be able to hold your normal riding posture, produce power without constantly repositioning, and finish longer rides without numbness or deep soft-tissue soreness.
